I like to read. It’s one of my passions. While on vacation this summer I read Carmine Gallo’s new book, Talk Like TED: The 9 Public Speaking Secrets of the World’s Top Minds. Do you want to succeed in this world? Those who can persuasively sell their ideas are the ones destined to influence those around them. The inside of the book cover says it best:
“Ideas are the true currency of the twenty-first century. So, in order to succeed you need to be able to sell your ideas and yourself persuasively. That ability is the single greatest skill that will help you accomplish your dreams. TED Talks have redefined the elements of a successful presentation and become the gold standard for public speaking. TED – which stands for technology, entertainment and design – brings together the world’s leading innovators and thinkers. Their online presentations have been viewed more than a billion times.”
Talk Like TED gives those of us who have a fear of public speaking the secrets of giving a TED-worthy presentation. Giving an excellent presentation is not rocket science but so few of us (including myself) have spent the time needed to learn the skills that engage the audience, persuade them of our point of view and do so in a memorable way.
I disagree with one point about the book: the secrets of public speaking are not secrets. Far from it. They are mostly just common sense. I doubt if any of those “secrets” will surprise you. That said, it’s still a worthy book to read.
